For auld lang syne, my dear

I am a stunned to think about all that has happened in the last three hundred and sixty-five days of my life. It feels I've crammed two or three years into this last one. It's not the amount of stuff that's happened, or even the number of things that I've accomplished, but rather the impact of the events.

Although some of this past year has been utterly painful, the likes of which I would not wish another creature to endure, some of it brought truly wonderful warm-and-fuzzy experiences, the kind that steadies wavering faith and restores coal-black hearts back to a healthy pink hue. The last twelve months have resonated deeply in ways I could not have anticipated. I can't help but hold close the idea larger forces are at work.

I get a dizzy when I remember tomorrow is the first day of 2009. And while year's end arrived at an agonizing pace (sometimes blazing fast, sometimes snail slow) I find myself now looking back on the past for clues into my future. And I am choosing, choosing, not to forget.

Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind?

For auld lang syne, my dear,
for auld lang syne,
we'll take a cup of kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.
